.......And New Kingston Turns 20

Friday April 30, 1990 was its official inaugural meeting. Twenty-five members ratified the Charter officially bringing into being the Rotary Club of New Kingston. This administrative year, we celebrate 20 years of outstanding service.

The New Kingston club sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Andrew, chose as its symbol the image of a galloping horse reminiscent of an earlier period in New Kingston’s history when it was the Knutsford Park race track. Today, New Kingston is Jamaica’s premier business district.

From the very outset and all administrations since, the New Kingston club has distinguished itself by effectively blending outstanding fellowship with special projects and service activities. In fact, that has remained one of the hallmarks of our success.

For a small and relatively young club, its track record of service projects makes impressive reading. The extensive and varied list includes career counseling, job preparation, working contacts with professional organizations, Speakers’ Bureau, career workshops, intra-club activities on business ethics, sponsorship of joint initiatives with overseas clubs, cosponsoring of the Caribbean Business Conference, special treats for the elderly and other challenged groups in the society, physical improvement work to community infrastructure and facilities, tree planting on the University campus, conflict resolution training, adopt a school, erecting Rotary 4-way test signs in schools, youth mentorship, adult literacy, HIV/AIDS and much more. Indeed, we have be recipients of numerous citations and District Awards for our work.

As the original ‘breakfast club’ in Jamaica our Friday morning meetings have become the preferred ‘make-up’ spot for Rotarians at home and abroad. There is hardly a Friday morning meeting at which visiting Rotarians and guest are not present. Some guests even have better attendance records than members!

As we prepare for our big coming of age celebrations, a special 20th anniversary committee will be establish to plan a fitting observance. Happy anniversary New Kingston
