A Welcome Message From the President

Gladstone Barrett President 2007/08

For the 2007/08 Rotary year, Club President Gladstone Barrett says the goal is to bring back the Magic of Rotary. Outlining his work programme for the new administration, President Gladstone said the magic will be brought back to each Rotarian and being contagious, “it will spread throughout the entire Rotary family.”

But what is this Rotary magic of which President Gladstone speaks? Simply, it is the 1.2 million Rotarians in the 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries worldwide who linked by a common goal remain steadfast in their commitment to make the world a better place.

“As Rotarians, we need to remind ourselves that we are part of the oldest and largest service organization in the world.” For this year, the New Kingston Club will bring back the magic “by working harder and fellowshipping harder. I am confident that with your wholehearted support and commitment we will have a successful year,” President Gladstone declared.

The magic of Rotary is in sharing Rotary with others - the family, the community, the world. In fact, Share Rotary is theme of this year’s Rotary International President Bill Wilkinson. If we are to contribute to the growth of this organization then we must be infused with new ideas and new energy. One way of sharing Rotary is by adding new members. It is no secret, that quality membership is important in driving the operations, fellowship and outreach activities of the club.

“We will share Rotary with new members and the goal of my administration is to add at least 8 new members by year end,” said President Gladstone. Through Rotarshare Nights; opportunities will be created for existing members to fellowship with prospective members as they share Rotary.”

The magic of Rotary will also be manifest in a number of service activities which the Club will undertake. In partnership with specialized United Nations agencies and the Jamaica Foundation For Lifelong Learning (formerly JAMAL), Rotarians in the District and a group of Rotarians from Canada, the Club will carry out a major literacy programme targeting children at the primary level. This will be the major project. Other initiatives will include an essay competition on ‘sharing in our communities’ as well as our long established programmes of sharing with entities such as the Christian Boys Home, the community Health Fair in Cassava Piece and the Harrison Home for the Aged. In all the hard work of service, there will be fun and fellowship as we share the magic of Rotary.
